Drunk driver kills pedestrian at Versova

A 42-year old pedestrian died after being hit by a speeding car at Seven Bungalows in Andheri on Monday afternoon. The driver, who was drunk at the time of the incident, was bashed up by an angry mob following the accident and was handed over to the police.

The deceased person has been identified as Ramesh Swami Talekar, a tailor by profession and resident of Sindhudurg Building, on Juhu-Versova Link Road.

According to the police, around 12.30 pm on Monday, Talekar was walking towards his home when a speeding car that was approaching from the opposite direction hit him. Following the incident, a huge mob gathered at the spot and started beating up the car driver, identified as Sunil Durgabahadur Thapa.

"Our patrolling police reached the spot and took Thapa into custody. We rushed Talekar to Cooper Hospital where he was declared dead. Thapa, who sustained injuries from the public beating, was also hospitalised. Thapa's medical report from Cooper Hospital revealed that he was drunk while driving," said an officer from Versova Police station.

He added that Thapa, a resident of Yadav Chawl in Adarsh Nagar area of Andheri, had gone to the seaside in Seven Bungalows with a few friends and consumed alcohol. Thapa, who works as a driver, was on the way home when the accident took place.

"We have arrested Thapa and will produce him before a court on Tuesday to seek police custody," the officer said.
