Although the Dedicated Bus Lane (DBL) has been opened for improving public transport and give a boost to bus commute in Bandra Kurla Complex, the fact is that the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) double-decker buses are finding it difficult to follow the rule. It will take at least fortnight for the buses to get used to the rules. Until then, motorists will have to bear with the added congestion at stops as two lanes are used by the buses.

The double-decker buses were giving the special lanes a miss and opting on the open and wider road. At the bus stops or shelters, bus drivers halt outside the DBL thereby ending up occupying two lanes of space and reducing lanes for other motorists.

"Initially there were double decker buses operating within DBL but due to tree branches there was a minor accident. As a result, we have requested Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to trim these branches for smoother operations," said Dr Jagdish Patil, general manager of BEST.

The MMRDA has also approached the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which has the know-how and team to maintain trees, with the request. The authorities are hopeful that after a week these double-decker buses would be able to ply on the DBL.

In all there are 25 double-decker buses that ferry passengers between Bandra and Kurla railway stations. With the two railway stations being important points for passengers to reach the financial district of BKC, there are frequent double-decker services that proves to hinder smooth traffic movement.
