In a strong move to make their voice heard, the Dombivli commuters have taken to social messaging app, Whats App, to highlight their plight during the local train travel. The residents have appealed to commuters to change their WhatsApp status to 'Dombivlikars need safe local train journey' to bring it to the notice of the authorities.

The move comes in the aftermath of two Dombivli youths Dhanshri Godave and Bhavesh Nakate losing their lives after falling off crowded local. NGO Eagle Brigade has also played an important role in motivating people to take to the social media app. Vishwanath Biwalkar, founder of the NGO, said, "We have distributed handbills, requesting commuters to keep change their WhatsApp status to 'Dombivlikars need safe local train journey'. This is our way to hammer the authorities with the problem that we are facing and bring their attention on the need to solve this issue."

He added that by doing this, not only is the message bound to reach the authorities, but it will also spread subtle awareness among the commuters to travel safe. This idea has received an overwhelming response from Dombivlikars.

"Concerned officials are aware of the problem, but nothing has been done yet. We hope that this small step makes some difference and the authorities address our problem," said Amrita Simpi, a commuter who has changed her status and has also appealed to her friends to do the same.

Echoing similar sentiments, another daily commuter Nivedita Mishra said updating status may prompt people to travel safe. "But the need of the hour is to increase the number of trains. The officials should know that we need safe journey and I hope we receive some positive feedback," she said.

Intense awareness
The Railway Police force (RPF) has intensified its drive of reaching to commuters appealing them to not to board an overcrowded train during peak hours. The team members are also requesting the travellers to abstain from standing on the footboard.
