A 26-year-old Dombivli resident has been arrested by the cyber crime cell of the Mumbai police for allegedly stalking and making obscene calls to a Kurla-based college student. The police suspect that the arrested person had made similar harassing calls to several women in the past. He was produced in court and released on bail on Tuesday.

The arrested person has been identified as one Shamsher Ghulam Khan.

According to the police, the complainant is a Kurla resident who studies in a college at Matunga. On February 5, the victim received a call from an unknown mobile number, which she did not attend. On February 7, she again received a call and when she attended it, the caller identified himself as Raju and asked for sexual favours. The terrified victim cut the call immediately.

The caller kept on calling regularly from February 8 to February 16, and then from February 24 to 28, using various phone numbers, and kept saying the same obscenities to the victim, police said.

"The victim was irritated with these calls, which were also affecting her studies. So she lodged a police complaint. On the basis of the mobile phone details, we managed to trace the suspect. We have seized three mobiles and three sim cards from Khan. He was released on bail by the court on Tuesday. We suspect that he had made such calls to other women in the past as well," said a crime branch officer.
