The proposed Girgaum Chowpatty-Eastern Freeway elevated road, supposed to connect the upcoming Coastal Road with the existing Eastern Freeway for seamless traffic, has been put on hold as of now. According to the authorities, several issues were ailing the project.

"There are too many issues in making the elevated road a reality. Ganpati processions pass through the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (SVP) Road. Plus, there is a temple and the JJ flyover. The height of the flyover will have to be raised considerably, making the project difficult to execute," said UPS Madan, metropolitan commissioner, Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA).

As per the plans chalked out by the MMRDA, the elevated road was to start from Carnac Bunder, where the southern arm of the freeway ends. Then, the nearly 4km bridge would have passed over the already congested SVP Road to reach Marine Drive at Tambe Chowk. The flyover was planned to have two lanes on either side, with an approximate construction cost of around Rs200 crore.

Officials, however, admitted last year that the construction of an elevated road over congested areas such as Null Bazar, Bhendi Bazaar and Girgaum would be challenging. These areas are choc-a-bloc with old buildings, hawkers, cars, markets and narrow carriageways. Moreover, during the 10-day Ganpati festival, the idols of all heights and sizes are allowed to use the SVP Road to go to Girgaum Chowpatty for immersion.

In August last year, the MMRDA had commenced the process to appoint a consultancy firm to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR). The demands and deliberations for the need for this elevated link was made during the empowered committee meeting on Mumbai Transformation.
