Vishwanath Maranna Shetty, Mumbai's underworld gangster who was arrested for killing notorious criminal Farid Tanasha in 2010, has written an application against three police officials attached with the Taloja jail. He has alleged that the men constantly demanded bribes as protection money.

Shetty has named the superintendent of Taloja jail Achme (first name unknown), jailor Ramesh Mengde and the orderly of superintendent Sanjay Chaudhari, in his application.

As per the application, which dna has a copy of, Shetty was lodged in the Anda cell in August last year, when Mengde took him to Achme, where the duo began demanding a bribe of Rs5 lakh.

If he doesn't comply, Shetty was threatened he would be subjected to 'naal bandi', a punishment where a person is hanged upside down, and a group of officers will take turns in flogging him. This punishment doesn't leave any evidence of any assault by the police.

Shetty is going to address the application before the MCOCA court today. He will also address the same to the home department, as well as other designated forums.

Shetty also claimed that the officials threatened to make him roam around the jail naked. In addition to this, the officers allegedly said that they would frame him by planting a mobile phone in his cell, and lodging another case against him.

"I was taken aback by their threats and thus pleaded that they reduce the amount to Rs2 lakh, which was finally settled," said Shetty in his letter.

Accordingly, Shetty said that Chaudhari reached the place in Sion, from where he collected the amount. "If the call detail records of the officers are checked, my allegations will be proved right," reads the application.

The accused also said that the procedure of demanding 'protection money' was conducted in two more instances.

When contacted, special inspector general, (prisons) Bipin Kumar Singh, said: "I have not seen the letter, and hence cannot comment about the same. However, if we find substance in the application, then an inquiry will be initiated against the responsible jail officials."
