A huge Ganesh idol made of 3,000 cupcakes baked by 100 homemakers will be set up in Khar on Sunday for public viewing. In the evening, these cupcakes will be distributed amongst underprivileged children — all this is part of a campaign initiated by a Santa Cruz-based woman to showcase celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi as well as spark an idea to promote a unique yet responsible and eco-friendly way of immersion.

This is the brainchild of Rintu Rathod, who had last year baked a 32-inch tall chocolate Ganesh idol and immersed it in milk before distributing it among underprivileged children. This year, she decided to take the idea a notch higher by planning to convey to people a simple message that real immersion is done by bringing smiles on the faces of people and not by polluting waters or causing trouble to others in the name of celebrations.

“We are doing this almost 12 days before Ganesh Chaturthi to show a symbolic manner to celebrate the festival in a day. Setting up the Ganesh rangoli constituting 3,000 cupcakes shows starting of this festival and how we bring in Lord Ganesh and then by the distribution of these cupcakes in the evening we want to depict visarjan and how this can be an alternate way of observing this important festival,” said Rathod, adding that since last year she has been trying to encourage her friends and relatives, who observe Ganesh festival and bring idols home, to celebrate this festival in a more holistic manner by thinking differently and helping not only the environment but also the lesser fortunate.

Helping her will be 100 homemakers and the venue chosen is Ramakrishna Mission, Khar. “We will begin working on making the arrangements from Saturday itself and a lot of work will have to be done as icing on the cupcakes will have to be carried out so that the final arrangement looks like a Ganesh, and handling 3,000 cupcakes will not be an easy task. The final arrangement will be placed in an acrylic sheet to ensure it does not get contaminated while people come to visit it,” said Rintu, adding that people can view it from 10.30am to 6pm on Sunday.

Sanjay Bhuskute, spokesperson for Maharashtra Pollution Control Board, said, “We have been trying to create a lot of awareness on celebrating Ganesh Utsav in an eco-friendly manner. A lot of people are taking different steps for this cause in different ways.”
