The Malabar Hill police on Friday arrested a domestic help and his two aides for allegedly stealing items worth lakhs when the employer, a diamond trader, was away in South Africa.

The accused have been identified as Kailash Pooransingh Dausaad, Shahbaaz Ansari and Fakruddin Khan. They are are under police custody till Monday.

According to the police, complainant RV Seth lives with his wife and 16-year-old daughter at Malabar Hill's Ramona Apartment. Seth has a lot of overseas customers and so has to go abroad often. A few months ago, he employed three youths – Rajesh Rana, Lalit Rana and Kailash Dausaad – and gave them a room to stay.

"The family went to South Africa in December. At the time, Seth's manager and the three youths were at his home. Between January 1 and 5, diamond-studded gold jewellery, watches and valuables worth Rs7 lakh went missing from the house," said a police officer.

He added that after being informed about the theft by the manager, Seth immediately flew to Mumbai and got a complaint lodged with the police. The police then started making inquiries with the domestic helps.

"After sustained interrogation, Dausaad broke down and admitted committing the offence with two of his aides. On the basis of the information provided by Dausaad, his aides were also arrested on Friday. We are now interrogating them to recover the stolen property," the officer said.
