As Govinda troupes competed against each other with the usual enthusiasm, the usual large crowds were missing at many places on Tuesday.

Onlookers preferred to flock to locations thathad celebrity attractions and DJs rather than the venues where only skill was on display.

Dahi Handi celebrations hosted by BJP MLA Ram Kadam and MLA Prakash Surve saw larger crowds than the celebrations at Dadar and Gandhi Maidan, Worli.

Kadam said, "Last year we did not organise the Dahi Handi because of the 20 feet height cap."

Besides bhajan and dhol performed by a local group, lavani dance performance entertained the crowd at his event in Ghatkopar this year. The local troupe was given the first chance to salute the Dahi Handi.

Meanwhile, Gandhi Maidan - that used to be packed until two years ago barely had a few hundred people. "They set up a handi only around 3 pm. We have come to see Govindas forming pyramids," said Suchita Tambe, resident of BDD Chawl. A small stage was set up by followers of Sachin Ahir. "There wasn't any prize money this time," said one of the pathaks that made a seven-tier pyramid here. At Dadar, Marathi cinema stars Amruta Phadke, Dnyanada Ramtirthkar and Radhaa Mistry broke the handi. "We are here to promote an environment friendly lifestyle. All festivals should be played in an eco-friendly manner," said Phadke.
