Diarrhoea cases on the rise in Kurla

Residents of the area believe contaminated water leading to outbreak, stop drinking tap water and avoid getting affected

Instead of drinking tap water, the family of Habib Khan is now storing packaged drinking water bottles in their house. Reason? Within a week, around nine members of the family have come down with Diarrhoea.

Just like the Khans, other families residing in and around Kurla area have been suffering from Diarrhoea for the past one week. Khan, said, "While my 74-year-old father is suffering from Diarrhoea for last two days, nine members from my family are getting medical treatment. The BMC officials — coming for the survey — are distributing electrolyte powder and taking water samples for testing."

Majid Chogle, secretary in one of the buildings in Kapadia Nagar, also found worms while cleaning the water filter. Chogle, said, "After watering plants in my house, I saw worms in the pot and realised that there were worms in the water."

Another residential building has more than 11 patients suffering from Diarrhoea due to contaminated water. Baitullah Khan, resident, said, "The disease has been spreading since past two weeks. Three children from my family are suffering from mild Diarrhoea of which one is hospitalised in Bandra. When we started discussing about the issue in WhatsApp groups, we came to know that there are many families who are getting treated for Diarrhoea in and around Kurla."

BMC has given notices to societies to clean thier water tanks. Chogle, said, "The notice states that the water tanks are not clean which may lead to water-borne diseases. Hence they have directed us to clean the tanks."

Dr Avinash Waydande, Medical Health Officer from L ward, said, "We have received complains from the residents and public dispensaries about increase in number of Diarrhoea cases. We have started the survey on Saturday. The testing of water samples has also been started. The water department will find out the point of source due to which the water is getting contaminated."

Speaking about the precautions to be taken at home, Dr Altaf Patel, Director of Medicine at Jaslok Hospital, said, "The patients must drink plenty of water to hydrate themselves. They should not be expose to sun and have an oil free diet to recover fast. People having symptoms such as cramps, small motions, nausea should go for health check-up immediately."
