Dhule farmer critical after suicide bid

Maha-Genco the state power manufacturing company clarified that Dharma Patil's land admeasuring 1.04 hectares is included in land acquisition for the thermal power plant.

Narendra Patil is sitting outside the ICU at JJ Hospital, praying for his father Dharma's well-being. On Monday evening, the 84-year-old farmer from Dhule attempted suicide by consuming pesticide at the Mantralaya. Patil's condition is deteriorating and he is on ventilator support.

According to doctors,Patil is not responding to medical treatment. "He has a medical history of lung infection and asthma," said a doctor, "His kidneys are not responding and he is expressing very little urine. As a result, he has been shifted to JJ Hospital for dialysis from St George's hospital on Tuesday afternoon."

Narendra says his father had been writing to ministers and the collector for a few months over his land issue. In the letter, he mentioned that he would commit suicide if they did not solve this problem. "My father gave up five acres of land for the government's upcoming solar project but we got insufficient compensation," he says.

"We were paid only Rs 4 lakh (Rs 2 lakh in January 2016 and Rs 2 lakh on May 2017) for land that had over 600 mango trees, 700 Chinese date trees, and a well. Now, we don't have any land to farm." Narendra claims the neighbouring landowner received over Rs one crore for 1.45 acres.

Maha-Genco, the state's power manufacturing company acquired Patil's land for a thermal power plant measuring 1.04 hectares. They say that Patil has been paid the full compensation of Rs. 2.18 lakh (plus interest), which he accepted on April 13, 2017. The company is considering providing further compensation at the rate of Rs 10 lakh per hectare, plus interest, as per the Government's 2012 rate.

"It seems there is a technical fault at the grassroots level," said State Medical Education Minister and Minister for Water Resource Girish Mahajan, "We will be checking the land panchanamas and the money distributed."

"The government has enacted the Right To Services Act and is providing various services online," said Finance Minister Sudhir Mungantiwar "In the same way, there should be a right to avail services. I will inquire what exactly happened [in Dharma Patil's case] and the government will take action against those responsible."

The power company has made it clear that Patil was paid Rs. 2.18 lakhs towards award for his land which he accepted on April 13th, 2017. The company has informed that the company is considering providing compensation at the rate of Rs. 10 lakhs per hectare and interest as per Government rate from 2012.

The Marine Drive police is conducting a primary inquiry into the matter.
