A part of Deodhar Road in Matunga caved in on Friday morning when a truck loaded with goods was parked by the roadside. dna on June 3 had reported about the shoddy refilling of trenches on the road by the contractors of sewerage operations department of the Bombay Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The dna report highlighted the condition of Deodhar Road where the civic sewerage operations department had placed a pipeline. Since its reinstatement part was not done properly and the trenches were not filled up well, the stretch had sunk just a few days after after the refilling and resurfacing work.

Nikhil Desai, co-ordinator for AGNI for F-North Ward, had made repeated complains to ward office, deputy municipal commissioner and different departments of the central agency. "There is complete non co-operation and lack of coordination between the ward and the central agency departments," said Desai, adding that whenever they complained to the ward office, they have fixed sentences to write, like: "We have been receiving complaints from citizens. Please look into the matter and do the needful".

"But no department actually does the needful. All the officials were apprised of this issue but no one took it seriously until the mishap actually occurred. All the officers came to the spot and vowed to take immediate steps. The contractor was called, deputy municipal commissioner Anand Wagralkar himself came, assistant commissioner Alka Sasane summoned a meeting, officers from the central agency also came down. I don't understand why everyone gears up only when the damage is already done and not when they could have prevented it. The refill and resurfacing of the trenches were done so shoddily that it was evident," Desai lamented.

Desai informed that both Khareghat and HR Mahajani roads have survived from such collapse or cave-ins since no heavy vehicles pass from there. But Bhalerao Marg experiences heavy traffic with heavy vehicles due to which the shoddy work of BMC was exposed.

Alka Sasane, assistant commissioner of F North Ward, said, "We have informed the Sewerage Operations Department and they have in turn informed the contractor. They will be taking corrective measures."
