In the wake of recent hooch tragedy, the state government's home department on Tuesday issued strict instructions to the police and excise department to initiate a massive drive across the state to unearth clandestine illicit liquor brewing spots.

Coming down heavily on officials, the home department in a statement released early in the day admitted that such a tragic event cannot take place without the connivance of local excise and police officers.

"Although action has been initiated in this case, it requires that immediate massive drive across the state is undertaken by the police commissioners and superintendents of police with the help of excise officials," reads the statement.

The department has marked the copy of the statement to all commissioners of police, superintendents of police and their supervising senior officers.

"Recently in the area of Malvani police station under the jurisdiction of CP Mumbai, consumption of illicit liquor has caused deaths of more than 100 persons. There are many more who are critical. Therefore, you are directed to take up a massive drive in your jurisdiction to unearth such clandestine illicit liquor brewing spots and sale of the same. If you find the slightest evidence of connivance of police officers / employees take immediate strict action including suspension by following the procedure laid down by the law," the statement adds.

Officials further said that such actions should be taken against those found to be involved or found to be conniving, howsoever senior he or she might be. Officials have also been directed to report the matter regarding unearthing of such illegal liquor brewing and the action taken against the concerned officers/ employees to the home department through the normal channel of reporting.

Making its intentions clear, the department said it will seek regular compliance reports which would be share with media at frequent intervals.
