As we entered the NGO Kranti, we were greeted by a sprightly bunch of young girls and a cat—quite a happy sight—thanks to Robin Chaurasia, co-founder, Kranti, who has given a new meaning to the lives of ten happy teens.

Having come from an adverse background, these girls faced a hapless struggle so far. With Kranti's help, however, the girls are being provided with dance/movement and other therapies, leaving a profound impact on them.

Chaurasia adds, "People think that education is the most important thing, however, I think that different forms of therapies, which take care of one's mental health, are more important. We do a mix-and-match set of extra-curricular activities along with academics like art, theatre, music, gym, etc. This brings out a more confident personality in each one of the girls."

Their self-esteem has risen, giving birth to dreams, goals and ambitions, all geared towards a positive change. However, the two-year-old NGO had to face the music from prejudiced neighbours, and have had to vacate their previous centre in Kandivali to move to a bungalow in Andheri, which they have rented for 11 months—but the thought of where to head after this has been harrowing the volunteers.

But this hasn't dampened the spirit of 17-year-old Tanya who has been dreaming of becoming an air-hostess. Having suffered from child abuse, the young lady finds peace in dance and has been pursuing Zumba. She adds, "I am so glad that I am part of this NGO since the past one year. Since my mother was a sex worker, people somehow expected that I would end up in the red-light area as well. But this NGO has given me the opportunity to dream big and is empowering me to achieve my dreams."

Saira, who has been here for almost two years, has been running from pillar to post to live her dream. She says, "I aim to set up another NGO in future called Kranti II to reach out to more girls like myself and make their lives better."
