In order to counter poor quality of work often carried out by conservancy workers in clearing garbage, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Monday started mechanised sweeping to clean roads. On day one, three newly procured sweeping machines were used at several roads in Dadar. The machine can sweep around 50 mtere in one hour.

Ramakant Biradar, assistant municipal commissioner of G-south ward said, "The newly procured sweeping machines were put to work Shivaji Park." He added that there is a good response from residents after the sweeping machine cleaned several roads, without creating much problems.

According to official from the Solid Waste Management (SWM) department, the machine was procured following the demand from group leaders. "The BMC group leaders had demanded to introduce mechanised sweeping. So, we decided to try it out in some wards. Based on the success, we will expand its use," said the official.
