A month after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) had sent a notice to the Mumbai Police declaring the Annexure building, located in the Mumbai police headquarters, as dilapidated, the demolition of the building has begun. The space will soon be converted into in a parking lot.

After the construction of the new building at the Commissioner of Police's compound, there has been a dearth of parking space in the premises. On several days, police vehicles pile up on the road creating traffic congestion. Now after the demolition of the building, the planned parking space will help de-congest the road.

According to police, the five-storied building was declared as dangerous for living by the Public Works Department (PWD) two years ago, and subsequently the building was vacated. All the administration units of Mumbai Crime Branch including, Property cell, Criminal Investigation Unit (operations),Anti Extortion Cell (AEC), Cyber crime investigation Cell, Modus Operandi Department, unit of Economic Offense Wing (EOW), and canteen were situated at the building from the time it was built in 1967.

However after the PWD's notice, the building was vacated and the units were shifted.

The demolition work began last week, however, the police have not proposed the exact plan for redevelopment. "The building is being demolished but we have not proposed anything yet. The space would be used as a parking lot till there is no other proposal,"said a senior police officer.

Police historian Deepak Rao says,"It would be great if the space is utilised as parking area only as most of the police vehicles are parked outside the commissioner's office
