The sessions court on Tuesday initiated the final arguments in the Preeti Rathi acid attack case. Till now, the prosecution, has examined 37 witnesses in the case. The arguments will continue on Wednesday in front of judge A S Shende.

Delhi resident Rathi was attacked on May 2, 2013, at the Bandra terminus. She had come to Mumbai to join INHS Asvini hospital in Colaba as lieutenant nurse. She was first taken to Gurunanak hospital in Bandra and then shifted to Masina hospital in Byculla. She sustained 12-15% burns on her face, neck, arms and deep internal injuries in the throat region, as she swallowed some acid. She later died of her injuries. The Mumbai police arrested Ankur Panwar, a neighbor of Rathi, in connection with the case.

Panwar and Rathi lived in the same colony in Narela in New Delhi. Their families shared a good rapport. Panwar had done hotel management but was unable to secure a job. Rathi, on the other hand, had cracked the Armed Forces exams. His father used to eulogise Rathi and admonish his son. Panwar then decided to kill her out of spite.

An eyewitness in the case told the court earlier that after Rathi got down from the train at Bandra terminus, a 20-25-year-old youth wearing a white cap, and his face covered with a scarf, approached her, took out the acid from a box, hurled it at her face, and fled the spot.

Special public prosecutor Ujjwal Nikam said, "Our final arguments commenced in the court headed by judge A S Shende. We have recorded statements of 37 witnesses till now. We first briefed the court about how the incident took place and then the background of the mishap. In the next hearing, we will produce more evidence so that the accused is convicted."
