Ridership on the Versova-Andheri-Ghatkopar Mumbai Metro is increasing at a rate of 18-20%. This increase has been attributed to the marketing done by Mumbai Metro One Private Limited (MMOPL) officials as well as to the convenient commute that the Metro provides.

The ridership in the last fortnight has ranged between 3.54 lakh and 3.64 lakh. On August 1, the average ridership was 3.40 lakh passengers, when the mode of transport had carried its 20th crore passenger. In June 2014, the average ridership was at 3.47 lakh passengers.

As per statistics with dna, the top five Metro stations in terms of footfall have been Ghatkopar, Andheri, Saki Naka, Marol Naka and Chakala.

The top five routes preferred by commuters are Ghatkopar-Andheri, Andheri-Saki Naka, Ghatkopar-Marol Naka, Ghatkopar-Saki Naka and Andheri-Marol Naka. In terms of percentage, the highest increase has been on Andheri-Marol Naka (29%), followed by 26% between Andheri-Saki Naka.

"Saki Naka has been emerging as the station with significant increase in ridership," said an MMOPL spokesperson.

Explaining how the firm's marketing strategy has contributed to the increase in ridership, an official said corporates along the corridor, operating dedicated staff buses from Andheri and Ghatkopar, were approached to switch over to the Metro. "Once a month we provide the facility to recharge the smart cards in offices, this becomes convenient and offices do not have to bear the cost of bus services. Metro works out to be cheaper," said the MMOPL official.

Data of commuters owning smart cards too is being analysed regularly. If a smart card user is low on balance, a message is sent reminding that a recharge is due. If the rides exceed a certain number a month, the passenger is informed about alternative smart card plans so that the overall monthly expenditure to commute in a Metro reduces. "If a smart card is not used for two months, a reminder is sent stating 'We Miss You'," shared an official.
