The Bombay High Court has asked the Railways to consider putting CCTV cameras inside women coaches on suburban trains, which would stream live feed to a control room. The move is expected to help prevent crimes against women in trains.

Referring to a recent incident, wherein a woman was molested on a Western Railway (WR) train, the court said, "Surveillance is a must. In times of technological advancements, railway is still relying on pulling chains in case of emergency. More modern methods need to be adopted to ensure safety of women."

The bench also suggested railways to consider having two-way communication speakers inside women compartments, so that a woman in distress can contact the motorman and pass on a message. "How do you expect a woman to dial the control room when she is in distress? Will the offender allow a woman to use her mobile phone in such a situation?" the court asked.

Appearing for the Railways, advocate Suresh Kumar assured the court that a committee would be formed by the Divisional Commissioner and a report would be made on whether the suggestion was feasible. The report will be placed before the court on the next date of hearing, he said.

The court also directed the Railways to consider improving the resolution of CCTV cameras on platforms for better visibility. The suggestions were given during the hearing of a bunch of petitions, including a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by NGO Help Mumbai, which has taken up the cause of lack of safety measures for women in the city.
