The Indu Mill premises on Tuesday witnessed politics over the proposed memorial to Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar, when Congress symbolically laid the foundation stone as a mark of protest against the state government.

The BJP on the other hand alleged that the proposed memorial which was kept in abeyance by the erstwhile Congress-NCP Government for years since they could not acquire the land of Indu Mill, would be completed by the BJP governments at the Centre and the state.

Demanding that the foundation laying for the memorial be held in one month's time, Republican Party of India president Ramdas Athavale has now proposed raising a Babasaheb Ambedkar's statue in the sea opposite Indu Mill and Chaitya Bhoomi at Dadar.

The Congress has alleged that the Devendra Fadnavis government has betrayed Ambedkarites, the followers of Dr. Ambedkar by doing nothing on the proposed memorial. Congress state unit chief Ashok Chavan said, "The BJP came to power with tall claims and false promises. The very fact that neither prime minister Narendra Modi nor the CM skipped a foreign tour to pay their respects to the Father of Indian Constitution proves what is their their priority."

Chavan said that since the state has done nothing on the proposed memorial at Indu Mill, Congress placed its protest by symbolically laying the foundation stone. Chavan said that it would have been better had the CM been there as a mark of respect to Babasaheb. "His counterpart in Madhya Pradesh Shivrajsinh Chouhan has celebrated Dr Ambedkar's birth anniversary in.a befitting manner."

BJP state unit president Raosaheb Danve along with city unit chief Ashish Shelar paid respects at the Chaitya Bhoomi along with hundreds of party workers. RPI chief Athavale said that the previous Congress and NCP government had only announced the memorial but could not get the land for it.

Athavale alleged that Congress was politicising the issue despite betraying the Dalits for years. "The downtrodden population would not vote for the Congress if continues to betray them with false promises."
