Criticizing the state Government for unnecessarily raking up the issue of de-recognition of madrasas in the state, Congress state unit president Ashok Chavan on Friday said that the issue had been raised to divert attention from scams in which names of BJP ministers figured.

While addressing a press conference at Gandhi Bhavan, the headquarters of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), Chavan said that this unwarranted step by the state Government had created a sense of fear among minorities.

Former Minister for Minority Affairs Naseem Khan and MPCC Spokesperson Sachin Sawant were also present with Chavan at the press conference.

Chavan said that the government was trying to deflect the public gaze away from the embarrassing spectacle of daily revelations about the scams perpetrated by BJP ministers. Chavan said that raking up such issues and making controversial statements so that a sensation was created was an old trick by BJP to divert public attention from real issues. Terming this a weak effort, Chavan said that Congress condemned the decision to de-recognize madrasas. He said that the decision went against the policy and decisions of the Union Human Resource Development Ministry, which has provided separate fund allocation for madrasas to promote the spread of basic religious values among children.

Naseem Khan said that this move by the government was creating a sense of fear among Muslims. He said that if the government was firm on its decision, it should dare to de-recognize schools or Shishu Centres run by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh.

Chavan said that state government can't impose national curriculum on Madarasas and that before it arrived at any decision, it should have consulted all the stakeholders, including Maulanas and those who manage the affairs of madrasas.
