Apparently everyone is keen on being involved in Swachh Bharat Abhiyan kick-started by prime minister Narendra Modi some months back. The drive has not only ensured cleanliness, but also created employment opportunities for many people in cottage industry with demand for coco brooms shooting up.

Coco broom gained popularity and became a symbol against corruption after AAP's Arvind Kejriwal adopted it as the party symbol. And it has been in demand ever since. PM Modi redefined it and made it more popular through Swachh Bharat Abhiyan.

Housing societies, schools, municipal bodies and even corporates have been latching on to the PM initiative and buying coco brooms in bulk for cleaning public places and schools.

Nawab Patel, a broom manufacturer in Gol Maidan, Ulhasnagar, says: "For the past two months the demand for cocoa brooms has gone up and vendors have been demanding more brooms."

"We have stocked a good number of coco brooms in our shops as one never knows when a nearby society or school decides to take up the drive. Hence, we are ready with ample number of brooms," said Sridhar Ram of Swastika general stores at Pokharann Road No. 2.

Retailers in the city too are happy as everyday they get bulk order from some society, NGO or corporate office. In fact, weekends see heavy demand as most drives are organized then.

Subhrat Deo, a retailer in Jambhli Naka, said: "This week we have an order for 50 coco brooms from Brahmin Society at Naupada. According him, bulk order benefits both the parties, as retailers get good sales and people get good discount."

The recently held cleanliness drive at Vasant Vihar, Runwal Estate and other societies across Thane, saw shops in the vicinity making a killing.

Nawab Patel said the drive had given an extra push to the cottage industry as well with employment opportunities increasing.

With coco brooms thus becoming popular, the day seems not far off when they would be sponsored by big companies for Swachch Bharat Abhiyan.
