The city's coastal road, which has been planned from Nariman Point to Kandivli at the moment, may extend into the Mumbai Metropolitan Region in the future. This is according to the draft detailed project report (DPR) on it, which was published recently by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC).

The DPR says that in the future the road might extend to Madh, Gorai and Dahisar. But a senior civic official said the extension plan will be made after the proposed stretch is completed.

“During the construction of the Nariman Point-Kandivli stretch, we will be given one arm for connectivity to Madh that can go further till Gorai. However, the Kandivli to Dahisar extension will be considered at a later stage. Any further extension will be part of the MMR,” a senior civic official said.

The official refused to comment further, saying the extension plan is at a preliminary stage.

The BMC recently made the DPR of the coastal road public for suggestions and objections to be submitted in a month. So far, the road department has received only five suggestions.

The 33.2-km road is likely to cost Rs11,299 crore. It will be protected by a six-metre-long sea wall, which will be constructed at points where land has been reclaimed for protection from sea storms. The road will also pass through two tunnels having a total length of 10km.

It will give the city an additional open space of 225 acres, which the BMC plans to develop as a green space.
