A day after Union Railway Minister Piyush Goyal held a ten-hour long meeting to chalk out a detailed plan to improve the suburban railway system in Mumbai, a coach derailed between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Masjid stations on Sunday afternoon. While nobody was injured in the incident, train services were affected with delays and cancellations.

A mega block planned on Central Railway compounded the problem, as trains leaving Thane from 11 am to 5.30 pm were diverted between Mulund and Matunga stations, halting at Mulund, Bhandup, Vikhroli Ghatkopar, Kurla and Sion stations.

The derailment took place at 1:44 pm, after the fast train for Karjat train departed from platform 5 of CSMT. The Central Railway officials said that soon after it left and was navigating a track change, it derailed.

"The wheels of the motorman coach derailed. Our staff headed by General Manager DK Sharma reached the site within 5 minutes," said Sunil Udasi, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway. The train derailed when it was being diverted onto the down-fast line.

Sources said that there were issues with the 'point' - where a train changes tracks - due to which the coach derailed.

The incident took place at a time when CR officials were having a meeting and discussing the future course of action on how to fast-track the plans announced after the high-level meeting on Saturday.

CR authorities claimed that there were barely 50 to 60 passengers in the train, and none of them suffered any injuries. The officials also said that rail traffic on the Harbour and Up and Down main line on slow tracks remained unaffected. However, continuous announcements were being made about delays and cancellations for upto 30 minutes.

The coach was finally re-railed at 4.05 pm, and by 5 pm the services were resumed.
