Train services on Central Railway (CR) were affected on Friday night after fire and smoke emerged from under a coach of a Thane-bound train as it pulled out of the platform at Dadar station. The incident occurred at around 9.24 pm on Friday.

"Brake-binding occurred in the coach, due to which there was a minor fire and smoke. Three locals were stuck due to this," said Sunil Udasi, chief PRO of Central Railway.

Brake binding is when a brake sticks to the wheel, resulting in smoke and sometimes fire due to the friction.

The fire occurred under Dadar's Tilak bridge and also partially burnt down the motor coach, which contains machines that operate the train. Trains going towards Thane and Kalyan were diverted on the Fast line, via Byculla.

Onlookers say it was difficult to douse the fire due to unavailability of water near the tracks. They had to use long pipes and source water from the nearby Swaminarayan temple outside the station. Firemen also had to clear an FoB nearby due to the smoke.

Passengers said their eyes were watering and some complained of mild asphyxiation.
