CM Devendra Fadnavis' Vidarbha gets highest rail funds in Maharashtra after Mumbai

Vidarbha got Rs 1182 crores from the recent budget while Mumbai, thanks to the Mumbai Urban Transport Project phase 2 and 3, got a cumulative Rs 1266 crores

The presence of Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis and the stellar showing in assembly and civic polls in the Vidarbha region by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has made the area the biggest recipient of railway budget funds in Maharashtra after Mumbai, a fund break-up provided by Central Railway shows. Maharashtra state on the whole got Rs 4995 crores worth of projects in the recent budget announced by Union finance minister Arun Jaitley on February 1, said CR officials.

Vidarbha got Rs 1182 crores from the recent budget while Mumbai, thanks to the Mumbai Urban Transport Project phase 2 and 3, got a cumulative Rs 1266 crores. MUTP 2 got Rs 630 crores while MUTP 3, which got sanctioned by the Union cabinet in late 2016, got Rs 636 crores. Mumbai also got three major projects cumulatively worth Rs 28546 crores sanctioned in the budget. These are the new suburban corridor between​​ Vira-Vasai-Diva-Panvel, the ​​elevated corridor between CST-Pa​n​vel with a pur to the upcoming Navi Mumbai airport, and the elevated Bandra-Virar project.

Vidarbha has got Rs 2177 crores worth of new projects sanctioned as well. However in this segment the higher allotment, after Mumbai, is for Western Maharashtra, which got 7169 crores. 

In Marathwada, the allotment has been Rs 780 crores and all of it is for just one project- the Ahmedanagr-Beed-Parli new corridor. This is a good 27 percent of the total cost of the project which stands at Rs 2826 crores. The line is a pe​t​ project of the Bharatiya Janata Party and is a 50-50 percent joint venture of the railways and the state government. Both the state government and the railway ministry have pinned high hopes on the project as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's trump card in Marathwada and Western Maharashtra, the two regions the rail line will connect. The state and Centre want the Ahmednagar-Beed line to be completed by March 2019 so that it can showcased for the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections to be held in 2019.

Konkan has got Rs 810 crores for its projects of which Rs 110 crores is for the laying a new line between Veer and Roha and Rs 200 crores for the start of electrification of Konkan Railway.

Mumbai- ​Rs ​1266 crores
Marathwada- Rs 780 crores
Vidarbha- ​Rs ​1182 crores
Konkan- ​Rs ​810 crores
Western Maharashtra- ​Rs ​500 crores
North Maharashtra- ​Rs ​457 crores
Total--- Rs 4995 crores
