In a major relief to lakhs of motorists driving towards the Western Urban Road (WUR) using the Sudhir Phadke flyover in Borivli (West), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has decided to connect the two with a cable-stayed flyover.

The proposed flyover will cut short the distance by at least 1.5 km. "Motorists coming from Mandpeshwar, using the Sudhir Phadke flyover, have to go along the highway for almost half a km towards Dahisar to take a U-turn to move towards Borivli and Andheri," said SO Kori, chief engineer (bridges), BMC.

The BMC's bridge department is currently working on the general arrangement drawings (GAD) of the flyover which will cross over the Metro and WUR to connect the east and west. According to officials, one lane of the Sudhir Phadke flyover will be extended over the highway and will connect the highway near the National Park junction. "It will cross both Andheri-Dahisar Metro line and the WUR and will go down along the highway near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park junction towards Borivli," said Kori.

"At least 10,000 vehicles use the stretch from Mandpeshwar to WUR to go towards Borivli and Andheri," said another senior official.

According to officials, the extension of Sudhir Phadke flyover over the Metro line and WUR will be cable-stayed. "It will be cable-stayed as there is no space to lay down pillars along the highway," said Kori.

A senior official said that the tender will be floated after GAD work. "After the award of work order, the extension of Sudhir Phadke flyover will be completed in 24 months time," said the official.
