Civic body cracks down on dirty toilets across the city

In a first, The civic body has decided to take action against the dirtiest toilets in the city. The civic body released results of a survey conducted to determine the cleanliness of public toilets by 80 lakh users at 54 public toilets across the city.

The public toilets at Gateway Of India were rated as the dirtiest with as many as 83 per cent of users voting dirty while only 7 per cent for clean. The BMC has decided to terminate the services of the toilet operator from Gateway of India. The termination notice being served to the toilet operator has stated there have also been several complaints of overcharging.

Kiran Dighavkar, Assistant Commissioner (SWM) said that all the assistant commissioners of 24 wards have been instructed to take action against the errant operators and ensure that these NGOs get their act together or face action.

Meanwhile other toilets in Mumbai, which have been voted the dirtiest include Kandivali public toilet (97 per cent) and Birla lane in Juhu (91 per cent).

The BMC had in December placed machines inside each of these toilets so users could cast their vote by pressing either of the three buttons; clean, unclean or ok.
