Residents of Bandra, Mahim and Dadar may soon get better beaches for outings and recreation. The state government has set the ball rolling for creating an artificial beach at Bandra Reclamation and nourishing the badly-eroded Dadar and Mahim coastline.

The Maharashtra Maritime Board (MMB) is working on the Rs 276.58 crore Chaityabhoomi beach nourishment project, which is part of the larger Asian Development Bank (ADB)-funded Sustainable Coastal Protection and Management Investment Program (SCPMIP). The project will named after Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar's memorial on the sea shore.

This will include the creation of a 1.75 km long and about 100 meter wide permanent sand beach on the Dadar-Mahim coastline and an around 500 meter Greenfield beach at Bandra to regenerate the coastline and promote water-based activities.

The project, the design for which is being finalised, will see a marina with berthing and refuelling facilities for around 40 yachts and pleasure boats being constructed in the Mahim bay with private participation. It will also involve dredging and construction of river training walls and breakwaters.

"The beach that once existed at Chaityabhoomi has been eroded due to various reasons," Atul Patne, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MMB told DNA, adding that the beach nourishment project would boost tourism. Patne said he had written to the BMC asking for the polluted waters of the Mithi river to be treated before being discharged into the bay.

This nourishment project was discussed in the recent board meeting of the MMB chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

"We are looking at the creation of a small pocket beach on the Bandra side near the Bandra Worli Sea Link (BWSL)," said Jitendra Raisinghani, Deputy Director, Co-Ordination, Asian Development Bank project.

The official said that while they planned to nourish around 1.75 km stretch from Mahim to Dadar, the shortage of high-quality sand was likely to restrict it to around 1.50 km. The MMB will source sand excavated from the dredging of navigational channels.

Actual work on the project is expected to start in 2019 and take around three to five years to complete.
