In these competitive times, teachers are going beyond their job description and doing research in their own field to boost their knowledge as well as that of their students.

One such teacher is Dr Sangeeta Srivastava, principal of TP Bhatia College of Science, Kandivli, who has been invited by China to present her research paper on "Bridging the gap between quantity and quality through technology: An Indian classroom experience".

Srivastava is also a chief academic officer of SVPV Vidyalaya. She was awarded a PhD in 2014 by the University of Mumbai in ICT (Information and Communication Technology) tools on the academic improvement of secondary school students. Srivastava has been invited to the XVI World Congress of Comparative Education Societies in Beijing, which will be held in the last week of August.

She has done research to study the effect of using ICT tools in enhancing communication skills, teamwork, problem solving, and critical thinking as well as self-esteem of Std X students. The study was designed as a quasi experiment with Std X students as the participants. Pre and post tests were administered on the variables using researcher-made as well as ready-made instruments.

An intervention programme was designed, developed and implemented using the ICT tools in geography, considering the fact that the subject is critical to understanding cultural and physical features of Earth. The results indicated that using ICT tools enhances the knowledge of the subject.

Srivastava said, "My research was on a large classroom, as many schools in Mumbai have 70 to 80 students in one class. I wanted to look at what methods a teacher should adopt when she is dealing with a class of this size and if she wants to use ICT tools. If you look at other researches, teachers have been using ICT tools, but in those cases, the strength of a classroom would be 20. My research does not just look at the use of technology being good or not, it is also looking at whether a teacher using technology in a classroom helps a child to boost his/her learning abilities as well as self esteem."
