For the 2,400-odd homebuyers, who have booked flats in the Chhagan Bhujbal-promoted Hex World project and are awaiting commencement of work for years now, the probe against the NCP leader has come as a boon, even if by way of some police action.

With the probe against the political family gaining momentum, the Taloja Police have also registered an FIR against the Bhujbals and other directors of Hex World.

Acting on a complaint by Chembur resident Yunus Abdul Rehman, who had booked an apartment in the Kharghar project, the Navi Mumbai crime branch on Wednesday began investigations into his allegations, a day after a case was formally registered.

Among the accused named in the Hex World scam are Chhagan Bhujbal's son Pankaj and nephew Sameer, besides three other directors of realty firm Devisha Infrastructure. Launching the project under its banner, the company had aggressively marketed it at real estate exhibitions in Navi Mumbai from 2009 onwards, generating huge bookings and collecting advances from prospective buyers.

Even as work never took off on the proposed 25-acre site at Rohinjan Village near Kharghar, the developers continued to participate in exhibitions over the years and raked in the money from gullible buyers. Things came to a head during an exhibition at Vashi earlier this year when the duped buyers threatened to storm the builder's stall. Eventually, they were asked by the police to demonstrate outside the exhibition venue.

Though the home buyers tried their best to get a case registered against the evasive builder for months, little came out of it till the court-monitored probe against the Bhujbals got underway this week.

Said deputy commissioner of police Suresh Mengde, Crime Branch of Navi Mumbai police, "We have registered the complaint under IPC act section 420, 406, 120 (B) and Maharashtra ownership flat act 3,4, 5,8. Our team has started investigation in the case. We have collected documentary evidence and issuing notices to witnesses to come and give their statements, following which further action will be taken against the accused developers."

Meanwhile, the Navi Mumbai police have also prepared a detailed report on the 15 properties belonging to the Bhujbals that were raided in the satellite city on Tuesday. The family has nine shops, five flats and one bungalow, most of which are lying vacant for years.
