The tragic death by drowning of a 10-year-old boy in a swimming pool on Saturday led to the arrest of a security guard over questions about his alleged negligence in the matter. The boy's parents have alleged that he had been near the pool area for over half an hour before he jumped inside, but none of the guards on duty were around to stop him. The MHB Colony police is scanning the CCTV footage of the pool area to understand the sequence of events.

Sahil Bhandare, 10, drowned on Saturday evening at around 5.30pm in the pool at Yogi Nagar's Ajmera Global School.

The deceased, a class 4 student, had been playing cricket in an open ground behind the school with his friends. The open ground is not attached to the school. The school was closed for the weekend. Police said that some of the boys climbed over the compound wall of the school, which had barbed wires in place, to gather the cricket ball that was hit into the pool.

Sahil followed them, and they returned after gathering the ball. Sahil went back with his friend and brother as he was tempted to swim, according to police. Subhash Chavan, senior police inspector of MHB colony police said,

"The boy did not know how to swim. The school's rear gate was closed. So he climbed a tree and went over the compound wall and then crossed the roof of a small changing room, from where he climbed down a pipe near the pool." He was accompanied by his friend and younger brother Vishal.

The security guard was at the front gate of the school. Some of Sahil's friends said that he assumed the pool was shallow, so he took off his clothes and jumped in. Sahil's father, Lakshman, said, "There was no barbed wire on the roof of the changing room. I went through the CCTV footage. My son went inside and was there for a good half-an-hour before he jumped. The pool is six feet deep. The guards did not know even after he jumped inside, because they hardly take rounds in the school. When Sahil did not come up, his friend informed the others. After a few minutes, at least 13 to 15 boys who were playing cricket came there and took him out. Although they tried everything, he couldn't be saved." He was rushed to Shatabdi hospital where he was declared dead.

Sahil studied in Vijay Nagar School, which is in the same compound as Ajmera School. The pool belongs to Ajmera School. The boy lived in Room number 1, Ramesh Patil chawl, which is in the same area. Apart from his brother, the boy is survived by his parents. His father Lakshman is a rickshaw driver.

One of the members of the management of the school, on conditions of anonymity said, "The entire place is secured with barbed wires. Despite that, he jumped inside. There is no negligence from our part, it is an unfortunate event and we are cooperating with the police."

The watchman, Ajay Pawar, 49 was arrested for negligence. The police has also booked one of the members of the management who will be arrested soon.
