Commuters travelling from Borivli station towards the Western Urban Road are having a tough time for several months due to the never-ending journey owing to a terrible bottleneck. The stretch between the Dahisar-bound bridge at Borivli east and Carter road, which is used by a large number of people to reach the highway, is a chronic traffic jam area during peak hours.

The journey from the station to Western Urban Road, which should not take over ten minutes, takes anywhere between 30-45 minutes on working days in the evening. Mahesh Gurav, a resident of Borivli who works at Santa Cruz said that the bottleneck in this stretch is a nightmare. “The time taken to reach from Santa Cruz to Borivli is sometimes lesser than reaching the highway from the station in an auto or a bus. There are several BEST buses lined up at the junction which makes the situation worse,” said Gurav.

Commuters attribute the traffic to the large number of buses and private vehicles that take the route in the absence of any alternative.

For Neelima Sable, a student of architecture and a resident of Magathane in Borivli, this makes things worse. “There is only one way to reach the highway and most people travel through this stretch. Due to the perennial traffic, auto drivers refuse rides and buses are stuck in the traffic. People have no other option but to wait,” she added.

While there are a couple of traffic police constables manning the spot on some days, it does not really help as the narrow street can only allow a certain number of vehicles to pass. “During the rains, the situation gets worse due to potholes,” said Manoj Bhide, a resident of Ashokvan, adding that commuters often prefer walking till the highway to avoid the jam.
