The Boisar chemical reactor blasted at around 11 pm on Thursday night and spread like a wildfire to the other industrial units of the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation in Palghar, killing atleast 3 and injuring 20 others.

The Boisar police have registered a case of accidental death after three charred bodies were recovered from the industrial unit at the E-plot of Boisar MIDC.

According to the police, the three dead were identified as Pintu Kumar Gautam, Janu Adaria and Alok Kumar. All three of them were workers.

The fire allegedly originated from the Novaphene Specialties Private Limited in E-107 unit of MIDC. It then spread to the other five factories -- Unimax, Prachi, Arti, Bharat Rasayan and Darbar. All of these six factories deal with the manufacturing of medicines. The injured were admitted to the Thunga hospital and the Vikas hospital in Boisar. The Vasai Virar fire brigade was pressed into service to douse the fire.

"More than eight fire tenders were sent to put out the fire. Water tankers were also sent. The fire is now under control. Foam was used for the cooling process," said a senior fire brigade official.

District Superintendent of Police (Palghar) said, "While it's a clear case of negligence, we are investigating the responsible persons behind the incident. The reports from the fire brigade and MIDC are still pending."

Additionally, the Palghar District Collectorate has formed a committee for auditing the companies in order to ensure if the safety and health norms of the industrial units of MIDC are in place.

The SIX affected factories of MIDC

  • The fire allegedly originated from the Novaphene Specialties Private Limited, a chemical factory in E-107 unit of MIDC. 
  • It spread to five factories - Unimax, Prachi, Arti, Bharat Rasayan and Darbar, all involved in manufacturing drugs.
