Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has taken back the 5000 square metres of plot, which was part of Raje Sambhaji Playground in Mulund, from caretaker Mulund Gymkhana for violating the norms and conditions laid down by the civic body.

Prashant Sapkale, Assistant Commissioner of T ward, said that the plot was a part of the 26,216 square metre playground and had been given to the caretaker since 1999. However, the caretaker Mulund Gymkhana had restricted entry to common citizens.

"This apart the gymkhana had flouted norms like letting out plots for marriage function. Civic ward office had received complaint regarding the same. Later on 25 January the gymkhana was given for a party, illegally. When the state excise department raided the place, they found alcohol from the place, which was not allowed. Civic administration took a serious note of the issue. Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta ordered an inquiry into the issue. After the inquiry, it surfaced that the gymkhana indeed flouted all the norms and conditions over the period and the decision of taking back the plot was taken", said Sapkale.

On Thursday, T ward staff demolished the barbed wire fencing and removed all the material from the plot and took over the plot. Security staff was posted by the civic authorities for 24x7 with a 100 square feet check post.  "This will allow the citizens, children and senior citizens extra space", said Sapkale.
