The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has identified a total 56 Advance Locality Managements (ALMs) which did not submit their plan to support the civic body in creating awareness on waste management by housing societies, and the solid waste management (SWM) department of the BMC has proposed to de-register these ALMs.

The BMC has prepared a list of all active ALMs and checked their performances, and based on their performances, the civic body has decided to de-register them.

Of 719 ALMs, only 335 ALMs have been found active. "During scrutiny it was found that the perforances of 71 ALMs were satisfactory while 126 unsatisfactory," said a senior official from SWM. He added that they have proposed to de-register 56 ALMs. The civic body wants to know how ALMs plan to encourage and help the bulk waste generators for segregation and composting of waste.

According to officials, these 56 ALMs are present in five wards. "There are wards where ALMs are active and they have promised that they will co-operate with the BMC in waste management at source," said the official.

"The deadline for all Advanced Locality Management (ALM) members to submit their plan before October 16 has lapsed, and now, the SWM department will decide on future course of action," added the official.

Earlier, the BMC chief had issued a directive to all ward officials to review the role of ALMs and ensure they actively participate in the 'wet waste segregation and processing at source' drive. In the directive, the civic chief had asked officials to de-register ALMs if they are not supporting BMC in waste management and appoint new ALMs in their place.

The civic chief will review notices issued to advance locality management (ALMs) for not supporting the civic body in waste management after Diwali.
