With concerns being raised over the deteriorating condition of Powai lake, Maharashtra Lokayukta has summoned officials from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) for a hearing next month (July 11).
The hearing is based on the complaint filed by Sunish Subramanian, Secretary of Plant and Animals Welfare Society, Mumbai, about the damage to the fragile ecosystem of the lake due to the release of polluted drainage water from residential societies into the lake, along with illegal fishing and destruction of crocodile habitat.
“The complaint was sent in July 2016, and the situation of the lake only worsened since. We will highlight this during the hearing along with photos of how several irregularities continue including illegal fishing during the day,” he said.
