A claim made by an independent candidate, who contested the February 21 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls, that votes cast by his family members and him had disappeared took centrestage on Twitter after Manish Sisodia shared it.
Delhi's deputy chief minister and senior leader of Aam Admi Party (AAP), Sisodia retweeted a media report on independent candidate Shrikant Shirsat's claim that he recieved zero votes despite voting for himself.
Shirsat stood for election from ward number 164 in Sakinaka.
Sisodia raised concern over errors generated by EVMs. AAP had recently sought paper ballot civic election in Delhi to weed out any possible manipulation with EVMs.
Bapu Pawar, additional municipal commissioner (election) of BMC, shot down Shirsat's claim. He said that the claim of the independent candidate is completely baseless as no candidate in BMC election got zero votes. "The minimum number of votes secured by any candidate in the BMC election 2017 is eight and the number of such candidate is just one,” said Pawar. He added that that there was no fact in the claim made by the candidate and that no one should get carried away based on information from social media.
