Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Colaba Raj Purohit has called upon the State Charity Commissioner to conduct an inquiry into Mumbadevi temple's income and expenditure of last five years, the use of funds and violations, if any, of the Indian Trusts Act.

Purohit, who had made an oral representation to the Charity Commissioner, will make a written submission soon demanding an inquiry into the functioning of the temple's administration. The Mumbadevi temple, which was built in 1675, is an important landmark in south Mumbai as it is dedicated to Mumbadevi. "I will soon send a detailed communication to the Charity Commissioner demanding an investigation into the functioning of the temple's administration in general. I will also seek papers with regards to the minutes of the temple trust and a probe into the use of funds and the services provided to devotees,'' Purohit told DNA, adding that the Charity Commissioner should initiate action against the temple if the probe reveals irregularities.

This comes after Purohit said that he had received complaints of the absence of facilities for devotees at the temple.

When contacted, Mumbadevi temple manager Hemant Jadhav declined to comment citing that he has yet to receive communication from the government.

Purohit's demand comes just two days after the Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced that the government will bring in a new legislation for the appointment of a trustee by the government at Mumbadevi temple along the lines of Pandharpur and Siddhivinayak temples. Fadnavis also assured that the government would bring in the system at Mumbadevi temple so that devotees are provided with all necessary facilities.
