It was a different scene altogether in the state assembly with both the BJP and the Congress attacking the Shiv Sena for alleged corruption in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) with respect to construction of roads in Mumbai.

Congress MLA Aslam Shaikh demanded an inquiry into road construction works in the last five years and alleged that out of a total Rs15,000 crore, Rs5,000 crore were through variations in contracts.

Pointing out that it was none other than Sena mayor Snehal Ambekar who had written a letter pointing out corruption in road constructions, Shaikh demanded an inquiry into the road contracts. He added that it can easily be found that the same contractors were being awarded contracts for years.

BJP city unit president and MLA Ashish Shelar balanced his criticism of the Sena by clubbing it with the alleged inefficiency of the urban development department of the previous government for ignoring corruption in the BMC.

He demanded an inquiry into the decision by the Congress-NCP government to implement integrated development of the textile mill lands, alleging that it was effected with an aim to benefit private builders and that the decision ended up in builders getting prime Malabar Hill plots and Mhada getting important ones in Byculla.

Shelar said that the last government had changed the Development Control Rule 58 16 times in just 18 months to provide benefits to builders.

He also cited BMC additional commissioner Sanjay Deshmukh's letter admitting rampant corruption and irregularities in road construction works. He pointed out that it is evident that not only were contractors paid for the work, which was shown as far more than the actual work, but also that the material used was inferior.
