The Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) police on Monday said that BEST bus driver Namdeo Damse (45), who was arrested on Saturday after he allegedly rammed the bus into a two-wheeler killing two Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) employees, has put the blame on the scooter rider. Damse told the police that the rider suddenly cut across and entered the lane on which bus was plying, and this apparently resulted in the accident. Police are still trying to find eyewitnesses to verify this claim.

The deceased, Tina Motani (26), a resident of Bhagya Laxmi Niwas Road in Chembur and Sandhya Kothari (27), a resident of Bhandup, were close friends and worked with TCS as pharmacovigilance scientists. On Saturday, they were going to Bandra for shopping on Motani's Activa scooter. Around 4pm, as they reached the Citi Bank signal at BKC, their vehicle was hit by a speeding BEST bus (route number 310) from behind. The duo came under the wheels of the bus and died, police said.

“During interrogation, Damse said that the scooter which was on the right side of the bus came to the left lane on which the bus was plying. This, as per Damse, caused the accident. We need to verify this claim with witnesses,” said senior police inspector Kundalik Nigade of BKC police station.

However, the police have not yet found a single eyewitness till Monday evening. “After the accident, the bus came to a halt and all the passengers in it ran away. We have got the bus inspected by experts of Regional Transport Office. The experts found no fault at all with the bus,” Nigade said.

Damse who has been charged with sections 279 (rash driving) and 304 A (causing death due to negligence) of the Indian Penal Code, was released on bail by the court, the police said.

“I am not in a proper frame of mind, and hence, I would not be able to tell you anything,” Damse told dna.
