Karamjeet Kaur alias Neha Virdi, commited suicide at her residence under mysterious circumstances.
A 27-year old model allegedly hanged herself from a ceiling fan at her Amboli residence on Thursday. The body was discovered by the woman's boyfriend, with whom she had been staying in a live-in relationship. The police are probing the reason that drove the woman to take such an extreme step.
The deceased model has been identified as Karamjeet Kaur alias Neha Virdi, a Delhi native.
According to Amboli police, Kaur was found hanging by her boyfriend Deependra Singh alias Devraj Singh (30) on in the wee hours of Thursday. Kaur was a struggling model and had given a few auditions in the past. She got married in 2012 and, two months later, she divorced her husband and started working in a private firm in Delhi.
"Kaur had attempted suicide due to depression once before, after her mother passed away. She later harboured aspirations to become a model and shifted to Mumbai. Kaur met Singh, who is an actor and a director by profession, at a party. After some time, the duo rented a flat in Sahjeevan society and entered into a live-in relationship. They were planning to get married. We are probing whether there were any differences between the two," said a police officer.
"On Wednesday, the couple had a heated argument with each other, after which Singh left the house. Upon his return, he knocked the door, which was locked from inside. When Kaur did not open the door despite several attempts, Singh informed the police about the same. The police then reached the spot and on opening the door, Kaur's body was found hanging from the fan," the officer said.
The body was then taken to a hospital and the police have registered a case of accidental death in the matter.
"Both had been living together for the past few months and we never found anything suspicious about them, as they were both introverted in nature. We were not aware about any fight or disputes between the couple," said a resident of Sahjeevan society.
"We are awaiting Kaur's medical report. We believe that the suicide must have taken place between 12-12.30 am and no suicide note has been found from the spot. The reason behind the suicide is still unclear, but we suspect that the act was a result of depression since the couple was going through a bad phase in their relationship and Kaur was also not getting any modelling assignments, due to which she didn't have any work," said a senior police inspector from Amboli police station, Bharat Gaikwad.
"We have not found any alcohol or drug consumption traces from her body and nor did the body have any other external injuries, except the ligature marks around her neck. We are recording the statements of Singh and Kaur's friends. We have informed Kaur's relatives in Delhi about the incident and will record their statements once they reach Mumbai," Gaikwad added.
