A man working as a chef at a renowned hotel was beaten up and looted of his valuables by six men late on Monday night. He was walking to his house in Nalasopara after completing his shift when he was attacked by the group. When he went to report the incident to the Tulinj police, on-duty officials asked him to find the robbers and report the crime after two days.

Swapnil Shantaram Lokhande, 32, a resident of Sanyukta Nagar in Nalasopara (E), is a chef specialising in the Chinese cuisine at a swanky hotel in Andheri. He was walking near the Sunshine complex in Nalasopara (E), adjacent to the station, when six men approached him.

Lokhande was kicked and punched by all six, after which they snatched his wallet and cellphone, and fled the spot, leaving him completely bruised.

The 32-year-old narrated his ordeal, saying: "I could sense I was being followed by the group, so I began walking quicker. Soon after, they attacked me, grabbed my wallet and purse, and ran away before I could do anything."

Lokhande said that he went to the nearest police station, but officers declined registering a First Information Report. "When I approached the Tulinj police to register the crime, on duty officers asked me to first hunt down the robbers and inform the cops of their whereabouts. Further, they refused to file an FIR and asked me to return after two days," he added.

Senior inspector Bajirao Kalantre, Tulinj police said: "We will speak to the complainant and register the FIR soon. We will also go through footage of the CCTVs in the area and probe the matter."
