After the floods, city wakes up to eerie calm

After being battered by record rainfalls on Tuesday, Mumbaikars were in for a major relief as rainfall on Wednesday fell spectacularly short of dire predictions made the day before. In fact, the difference is evident from the fact that between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm on Tuesday, the city saw 297.6 mm of rain while on Wednesday it was a meagre 6.2 mm in the same period at the Colaba observatory. The Santacruz observatory recorded 6.5 mm of rainfall.

Mumbaikars can also rest easy for the days ahead, too. "The low pressure system that brought heavy rainfall to Mumbai and other parts of north Konkan has moved and further intensified towards Saurashtra," said K S Hosalikar, Deputy Director-general (western region) of the Indian Meteorological Department. "We have now reduced the warning level for Mumbai to 'low' now and the city is likely to receive heavy and intermittent rainfall across."

Over the past 24 hours Colaba recorded a rainfall of 101.8 while Santacruz received 331.4mm rainfall meanwhile Palgarh received 280mm, Virar received 179mm, Borivali recorded 302 mm, Thane recorded 247mm and Dadar recorded a whooping 342mm.

As per IMD officials, Wednesday began with several parts of the western suburbs receiving heavy rains early morning. However, it subsided as the day progressed and several parts saw the sun come out.
