This week, three babies who underwent an open-heart surgery, performed gratis, at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital (KDAH) hospital will visit the facility again, for post-surgery check up.

dna had reported on February 12 about the helpless city couples who were unable to afford the cost of open-heart surgeries for their little ones, who are up to 15 months old. After the three babies got operated upon at the Andheri hospital, they have happily spent all this time at home, leading normal lives.

This paper's report detailed how the parents lack the money for treatment that threatened their infants' lives, who were in the care of Wadia Children's Hospital, Parel. The babies had holes in their hearts and urgently needed surgery.

Responding to the report, KDAH did the surgeries for free. The cost of each surgery would have ranged between Rs1.5lakh-3 lakh.

According to the doctors, the babies are responding well to the treatment. After the months we asked them come for follow up. The babies are leading a completely normal life. They families are keeping in touch with us. This week they come for the first follow-up after the surgery," said Dr Snehal Kulkarni, cardiologist at KDAH, who is also attached as honorary consultant to Wadia Children's Hospital.

"One of the youngest babies is 29 days old, and we will operate upon her a month later, because currently she is not fit for surgery," she added.

According to the parents of this babies, five-month-old Rahul Gupta, five-month-old Vidhi Pawar and 15-month-old Sejal Jagtap are doing well at home.

Vinod Pawar, father of Vidhi, a Sandhurst Road resident who works at a surgical shop, said, "I stay alone as a paying guest while my wife and daughter stay at our native place in the Konkan. For the treatment, they come to Mumbai and stay at a relative's. We are really grateful that everything went smoothly. Now after the first follow-up, I will send my daughter back to the village because some of my kin are eagerly waiting to see her."

"My wife and I are very happy with the treatment we got at Wadia Hospital and KDAH. We don't have any complaint, we are just thankful to all the people responsible for conducting this surgery, becasue we couldn't have raised the fee amount needed for the operation. I thought God had rushed to save my daughter and give her a fresh lease on life. We spoke to the doctor and were asked to come to Wadia hospital for the first follow-up," said Sejal Jagtap's father Vivek, who works as a barber in Ulhasnagar.

"My entire family is happy after the surgery and my child is responding well to the treatment. There is no medical complication," said Rahul's father Dhanesh Gupta, who works as a daily wager in Mumbra.
