Looking at protest from several quarters over fee hike in University of Mumbai examination (MU), the authorities on Thursday decided to slash fees by 60 to 80%.
The decision was taken after academic council meeting which was held on December 11. However the new examination fee will be applicable from academic year 2018-19, and the first examination of the session will held in summer of 2018. Though the exam fees have been reduced, the University has decided to continue 5% increase every academic year.
MU faced lot of flak when the examination fees were steeply hiked in 2016-17. It lead to massive protest with number of students refusing to pay exam fees.
"For the Under Graduation courses, if a candidate is appearing for only one paper the fee will be only Rs 200 instead of Rs 1000. In case of post graduate courses, if a candidate appears for only one paper, the fee has been reduced by 60%", according to statement issued by the Mumbai University.
PRO of the Mumbai University, Leeladhar Bansod, in a press statement said, "After the examination fee was fixed in the year 1996, it was revised directly in 2001. Since then exam fees were not revised for 16 years. Still looking at the demand of students, MU has taken the decision."
