A 20-year-old student of third-year Bachelor's of Science jumped from the second floor of his examination centre at NG Acharya College, Chembur after he was allegedly caught cheating. The student refuted the allegations, claiming he did not carry any chits and was forced to sign the undertaking that he was cheating in the exam, which led him to jump.

Ravi Mishra, a Kurla resident and student of Ramniranjan Jhunjhunwala College, Ghatkopar, went for his final-year paper on Electronics on Thursday, scheduled from 3pm till 5.30pm. He was about to complete his examination at 5.25pm when, according to him, a supervisor found a chit on a floor, thought he was cheating, and took away his paper.

Mishra said, "The students sitting near me left the classroom after writing their papers. Since the chit was lying on the floor close to me, a supervisor thought it was me who was copying, and took away my answer sheet. Both the supervisor and another female professor started shouting at me, saying they had caught many cheaters like me and so on. I felt bad that I was blamed despite not doing anything. They forced me to sign on some papers that said I had cheated in exam. I have never copied in my life. Under the circumstances, I straight up went out and jumped from the second floor of that college."

It was Mishra's last examination. According to him, all his papers went smoothly and were easy. HE has sustained injuries to his head, back, hips and legs, which he cannot move. He was rushed to Shatabdi hospital and later to LTMG hospital in Sion. HE was discharged on Friday evening.

Gauri Lele, principal of NG Acharya College, however, said, "The student was caught with 15 to 20 copy chits with him. The exam had five minutes more to get over, and he dared to remove the chit with him. At that time, our supervisor caught him. We followed the procedure laid down for copying cases. Now, we will send the report to the University of Mumbai, where the Unfair Means Committee will take a final decision, and the student will be called and given a chance to speak."

An officer from Govandi police station said, "The officer who is investigating the matter has gone on leave. I don't know if a case has been registered or not."

Vipin Singh, Mumbai president of National Students Union of India, said, "The Acharya college authorities first thought of calling the police to get rid of any problems, rather than take the student to hospital. Mishra was rushed to the hospital by college students. We will take up this matter with the University of Mumbai."

Another Govandi police officer said on the condition of anonymity, "A student who jumped from the second floor was called to the police station today (Frisday) so his statement could be taken. But his condition id not allow for that. We will wait till he gets well and then investigate the matter to register a case."
