The residents of Tardeo and nearby areas will soon be in for a recreational treat. A new open space will be thrown open to the public by the end of this month. The Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai (MCGM) will be opening the Bhausaheb Hire Udyan on Sane Guruji Marg in Tardeo.

The 5,000 sq mt open space will have a basktelball court, a skating ring, a kabaddi space, and a children's park, among others. "The space was lying a transit camp, as a dump and was being misused by anti-social elements. We have cleaned up the area, redone everything, and even removed around 25 hawkers from the entrance to make it look appealing," said Vishwas Mote, Assitant Municipal Commissioner of D Ward. The open space is likely to be thrown open to public on April 26.

The park will also have a gazebo and sitting area for senior citizens. A small garden has been carved out with flowering plants to attract butterflies, along with a separate open plaza. The basket ball court and skating ring have been constructed in such a way that they can be merged when larger space is required for a sport. "Kabaddi is being promoted in the traditional way. We are spreading red soil to make the ground look like traditional kabaddi rings," said an MCGM official.

The work on the space started in December 2016. A 2,000 sq mt plot which abuts the open space is left the way it is and will be developed as a public ground for other sports later.
