The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) activists recently protested against Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation for allowing CBSE-affiliated Seven Square Academy (SSA) to run a private school on land reserved - by the civic body itself - for a technical school.

Now, the general body of the corporation has accepted the school trust's proposal to change the reservation of land from 'technical' to 'secondary' school. Suggestions and objections have been kept open on the proposal by the corporation.

Last week, AAP activists protested against the civic authority for allowing the CBSE school to come up. According to the part members, it is a violation of the rule as the land reservation is for a technical school and playground for poor children of the area, but it is being given to a private school.

Sukhdev Benbanci, convener of AAP, Mira Bhayander, said, "Our protest was against the corporation and all the corporators who accepted the proposal of the trust to change the reservation of land, which was meant for poor children. Students from our area have to go to far-off schools. If the technical school had come up here, then many children from poor families would have benefited."

Ahyut Hange, MBMC commissioner, said, "The school trust has proposed to the corporation to change the reservation of land from 'technical school' to 'secondary school'. The corporation will ask people for suggestions and objections on the issue. The proposal will soon be tabled for hearing before the state government for final sanction."

When told that the school is already running a secondary section on the land for long, Hange said, "I have no clue whether there is a CBSE school running or not on that land. I took charge only two months ago."

Narendra Mehta, founder of SSA and BJP MLA from Mira Bhayander, said, "The allegations of AAP activists are baseless. Our trust bought the land from a farmer and it does not belong to the corporation. The reservation was for a technical school and our trust could have brought a technical school, but the land required for such an institute is five acres in area and the land is two acres. Hence, we started a CBSE school which consists of primary and secondary sections. Our trust has proposed to change the reservation to secondary school, which has been accepted by the civic general body. It is open to public suggestions and objections. Our school is legal and we have the occupation certificate and permission from fire brigade for the eight-storey school building."
