Chhota Kashmir, a quaint stopover adjacent to the busy arterial road of Aarey, is a spot that many of us (who have attended school in Mumbai) would have visited at least once during our student life—those much-awaited annual affairs were a matter of great fanfare.

Be it the boats perched on the lake, the platter of snacks available under a canopied-sitting area or the joyrides for children, Chhota Kashmir has something to offer every patron. No wonder then that the place, even on a regular weekday evening, is buzzing with activity. And, if the weekday happens to fall in a vacation period, the parking lot adjacent to the lake gets jam-packed with hawkers selling knick-knacks.
Vilas Shirke, manager of Chhota Kashmir for the past three years says, "We get a lot of families over weekends and during holidays. On weekdays, however, the evenings witness several couples and individuals who come in for a quick snack on their way home from work." A unique attraction constructed and maintained by Aarey for over two decades now, Chhota Kashmir definitely looks its age with much of the toy machinery having rusted and out of commission.

But the machinery that still works has retained the interest of many. For a nominal fee, kids can choose from a plethora of entertainment options such as dashing cars, toy train rides and boat rides. And when exhaustion sets in, one can relax in the food court beside the lake and enjoy a steaming cuppa tea or coffee with some piping hot vada pav, misal pav and other local delicacies. An additional benefit for the visitors is the ample parking space that the authorities have thoughtfully provided.
Speaking about her visits to this serene lake with her two-year-old son, Janice Goveas opines, "A lake with boating options is a rarity in our city, so I often come here with my son. Evenings by the lake are also quite a beautiful sight. In today's time and age where malls are mushrooming rapidly across the city, we prefer coming here to enjoy the greenery and the outdoors. However, the place can definitely do with better maintenance and approach roads."
